Jordan Peele, the director behind Get Out and Us, is set to produce a remake of Wes Craven’s classic 1991 horror film The People Under The Stairs.

The original film followed a young boy named Fool, who breaks into the home of his family's greedy and uncaring landlords, “he discovers a disturbing scenario where incestuous adult siblings have mutilated a number of boys and kept them imprisoned under stairs in their large, creepy house. As Fool attempts to flee before the psychopaths can catch him, he meets their daughter, Alice, who has been spared any extreme discipline by her deranged parents.”

I loved this cray-ass and deranged movie when I first saw it as a kid, and my favorite character was Roach. It wasn’t until I was older that I saw the social commentary and satire in the story. Peele loves including social commentary and satire in the films he makes, so there’s no doubt that this remake will also heavily include that.

Peele will produce the remake alongside Win Rosenfeld through their Monkeypaw Productions banner. Peele is not expected to direct the film himself, and we don’t know if he and/or Rosenfeld will have a hand in writing the script, as they did in co-writing Candyman alongside director Nia DaCosta.

Before Wes Craven passed away, he was developing a People Under the Stairs TV series for the SyFy Channel. The show never made it to production, but it was described as “a contemporary Downton Abbey meets Amityville Horror that would’ve followed a young woman who goes missing at the grand Robeson Family Manor and faces the centuries-old horrors that lie deep within the estate.”

I imagine Peele plans to take things in a different direction and put an emphasis on the film’s social commentary. I’m curious to see what Peele’s vision for this story is and see who he brings on board helm it. What do you think about Peele developing a remake of The People Under The Stairs?
