Jordan Peele Signs Five-Year Deal With Universal and Will Write and Direct Two New Films
Jordan Peele, the writer and director of Get Out and Us, and his Monkeypaw Productions has signed a new five-year exclusive production partnership with Universal Pictures.
Peele will write, direct, and produce his next two films under the deal and Monkeypaw will also focus on other project championing filmmakers with a focus on high-level content that transcends genre.
Both Get Out and Us made a lot of money for Universal and the films were met with critical praise, so it’s not surprising that the two would continue working with each other. There are no details on the next two films that Peele will develop, but as a fan, I’m excited to see what other original stories he is going to tell.
Before this deal was in place, Monkeypaw was developing the Candyman reboot, which was written by Peele and Win Rosenfeld, and directed by rising filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Little Woods). Universal Pictures will release the film on June 12th, 2020.
Donna Langley, Chairman for Universal Filmed Entertainment Group had this to say in a statement:
“Jordan has established himself as a premier voice and original storyteller with global appeal. He is leading a new generation of filmmakers that have found a way to tap into the cultural zeitgeist with groundbreaking content that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds. We also share an important goal with Monkeypaw when it comes to increasing representation on-screen in the characters that are portrayed, the stories that are told, and the people who tell them.”
Peele added:
“It would not have been possible to make Get Out and Us without the endless trust and support we received from Donna Langley and the team at Universal. Their willingness to take risks and their commitment to original content makes them the perfect collaborative partner for Monkeypaw. I couldn’t be more excited for what lies ahead.”
I’m happy to see Peele find success in his directing efforts and it’ll be interesting to see what films he’s cooking up for the future.
