Josh Brolin Compares Villainous Roles of Cable and Thanos, Says Making DEADPOOL 2 Felt Like a 'Business Transaction'

Josh Brolin has had many memorable roles, from Goonies to No Country For Old Men, Milk, and the Sicario films. But he has made his biggest mark recentlyplaying villains in superhero films. His biggest role was Thanos, which he played across several films in the Infinity Saga, bringing the chapter to a close. But he also played the character Cable, a Cyborg from the future who had to go up against Deadpool, in Deadpool 2.

He recently talked about the two roles in a recent appearance on the Team Deakins podcast (via CBM), and surprisingly said that his participation in Deadpool was very formal, despite the movie being a major comedy. Here’s what he said:

"Deadpool was hard. Even though it was funny, it was harder. That was more of a business transaction, it was more, 'We need to make this like this,' whereas I didn't feel that way with Avengers."

He added that he was able to connect to the character Thanos in the Avengers films, comparing him to another famous character:

"I mentioned [Marlon] Brando in Apocalypse Now, this guy who is very elusive and insane but what he is saying makes sense and is poetical. I started seeing the parallel, which I liked for me. I loved being able to resort to a film like 'Apocalypse Now' when I was doing something like 'Avengers.'"

Maybe it was such a stark difference because he was able to play Thanos through many films within a sprawling story, and Cable was a one and done situation? Or maybe it was just the differing directing styles. It’s too bad that he wasn’t able to enjoy playing Cable more, but I definitely enjoyed him in the role and would be happy to see him resurface in a future film.

Did you enjoy Brolin in Deadpool 2?
