Josh Brolin Doesn’t Seem Too Excited About a Potential GOONIES 2
It’s been nearly 40 years since The Goonies first hit theaters and became an iconic piece of pop culture. Over the decades, talk of a sequel has never completely died down, but earlier this year it started to feel more real than ever. Warner Bros. reportedly hired a writer to bring Goonies 2 to life with Steven Spielberg producing.
Fans have been excited about the possibility, and many of the original cast members seem ready to return. But there’s one major cast member who isn’t exactly jumping for joy at the thought..Josh Brolin.
Brolin, who famously played Brand Walsh in the 1985 adventure classic, has since gone on to star in massive hits like No Country for Old Men, True Grit, Avengers: Endgame, Dune, and Deadpool 2.
During a recent interview with io9 for his upcoming film Weapons, the actor was asked about the status of Goonies 2 and whether he’d be interested in coming back. His answer? Pretty hesitant.
“I would [have trepidations],” Brolin admitted when asked if he’d return to play Brand.
When pressed on why he feels that way, he explained:
“Because I love The Goonies, [but] it’s been 41 years. Let it lay. I mean, no, I love the idea, but I don’t know. If they made one with different kids, then it becomes a different thing, and I think it taints the original one.
“I think people get excited, and people who were in the original movie, they get excited about being able to work with that group again because it was such an amazing experience. So do I think it should be done? I don’t know, man. I love it just standing like it does.”
That’s a pretty strong statement, and it sounds like if Goonies 2 does happen, it might have to do so without Brolin. That could work as Brand was always a bit on his own path in the original film, so the story could easily explain his absence.
Then again, the sequel could go in a completely different direction with a new group of kids and another mystery tied to One-Eyed Willy.
But Brolin’s perspective makes sense. Forty years is a long time, and sometimes it’s better to let a classic remain untouched. Whether Warner Bros. agrees with him, or whether fans even want a Goonies 2 without the full original cast, remains to be seen.
