Josh Gad Had One Condition Before Saying Yes to His Wild WONDER MAN Cameo
Marvel Studios has a knack for sneaking in surprises, and what they did with Josh Gad and Wonder Man was a ton of fun.
The Disney+ series leaned fully into meta comedy in Episode 4 by letting Gad play a hilariously obnoxious version of himself. As it turns out, that appearance almost didn’t happen without one very specific promise.
In a recent interview with Los Angeles Times, Gad explained that Marvel floated what he called a “crazy idea” and that led to a conversation directly with Kevin Feige. Gad was game, but only if one box was checked first.
“I said to Kevin Feige … as long as I get to still play a character down the road in the MCU that isn’t Josh Gad, I’m happy to do this,” Gad said. “He said yes, so it was like, ‘Let’s buckle up and go on this weird journey together.’”
Feige saying yes opens the door to something fans love to speculate about. Gad popping up again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as an actual superhero or villain is now officially on the table, even if nothing has been announced yet.
Within Wonder Man, Gad’s self-parody serves as the boss and buddy of DeMarr Davis, also known as Doorman, played by Byron Bowers. Doorman’s powers include phasing through solid objects and teleporting things and people through his own body.
Naturally, this leads to Gad’s character meeting a very strange fate when he ends up disappearing inside him. It’s absurd, unexpected, and perfectly in tune with the show’s offbeat energy.
Shorrunner Andrew Guest confirmed that Gad’s character very much still exists, saying, “Josh Gad is alive and inside Door Man currently. If we get a Season 2, my promise is to get Josh Gad out of Door Man, and back into the world.”
Guest went on to tease that the experience might leave a mark, saying: “It has occurred to me that maybe Josh Gad would have Door Man powers, after having been inside him for so long. Maybe Josh Gad becomes the new Door Man!”
For Gad, the cameo is just another stop in a career that’s been packed with variety for more than twenty years. His film work includes Watching the Detectives, Love & Other Drugs, The Internship, Beauty and the Beast, and Adulthood.
Of course, he’s also instantly recognizable as the voice of Olaf in the Frozen franchise and Chuck in the Angry Birds movies. As for his future projects, Gad is set to return for The Angry Birds Movie 3 and will also appear in Spaceballs 2, which a lot of fans are excited about.
It’ll be interesting to see what Marvel ends up doing with Gad i the future.
