Joss Whedon Discusses BATGIRL and Casting an Actress That is "Just Right" For the Role
For the first time since it was announced that Joss Whedon would be writing and directing Batgirl, he talks a little bit about working on the film and casting the character. While talking to Variety on the red carpet for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he said:
“There’s so many things to say about her. I’m very excited to see a girl in the cowl."
So are a lot of other fans! We've already heard rumors that the film adaptation will be inspired by DC's New 52 version of the character. According to that report, it will follow comic writer Gail Simone’s "harder-edged storyline rather than the more comical, playful 'Batgirl of Burnside' series that was rebooted in 2014, featuring the hero as a social-media obsessed student living in a hipster neighborhood of Gotham."
As for casting the role, Whedon hasn't even started thinking about it yet. Right now, he's just getting to know the character and figuring out what he wants to do with her. When asked about casting, he said:
“No, I don’t have my eye on anybody. I’m creating this character. I’m in a dialogue with her. We’ll see who joins that later on... I think this is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her.”
When asked if he wanted to cast a fresh new face in the role of Batgirl, the director said:
“I’m not against movie stars. They’re great, but you need somebody who’s going to be just right. And, in a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight.”
He then jokingly says, “[It’s] definitely Vin Diesel.” I'm excited to see how Whedon handles Batgirl and who he'll eventually cast in the role. Who would you like to see take on Batgirl?
