J.R.R. Tolkien's Family Makes it Clear That They Don't Endorse The Upcoming Biopic TOLKIEN
As a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, I’m looking forward to the upcoming biopic Tolkien, which stars Nicholas Hoult as the famed author of the legendary Middle Earth stories. The movie actually looks like it will be really good!
The movie will explore Tolkien’s early life and follow "the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the 'fellowship' apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels."
Well, Tolkien’s family has made it very clear that they aren’t on board with the film and the estate released a statement saying, "They do not endorse it or its content in any way.”
A representative for the family also said that none of them have even seen the movie yet and the “statement wasn't regarding any particular scene or element of the story, adding that the estate had been approached about biopics in the past without ever giving its approval.”
Who knows, maybe if they actually see the movie, they’ll like it! The movie was directed by Dome Karukoski from a script written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford. The director is a huge fan of Tolkien and the stories and world that he created and he wanted to give Tolkien’s personal story the film that it deserves. Hopefully he was able to pull it off and deliver a great movie.
The movie also stars Lily Collins as Edith, Tolkien’s wife, as well as Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O’Reilly, Pam Ferris, and Derek Jacobi.
Tolkien will be released in theaters on May 1st.
