Julie Bowen Talks About Returning to HAPPY GILMORE 2 and Reveals Film Will Utilize De-Aging Tech

Two-time Emmy winner Julie Bowen is best known for her TV roles in shows like Modern Family, ER, Ed, and Boston Legal, but she got her first big screen break in the Adam Sandler film Happy Gilmore.

Now she’s back on set 28 years later for the long-awaited sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, and she’s giving us a glimpse at how things are going.

During a recent interview with Collider, Bowen was asked if she ever imagined Happy Gilmore 2 coming to fruition, and she responded:

"I didn’t. I’m at the beginning of shooting it right now. As a matter of fact, I came to you from the set, so you’re welcome. I didn’t realize how many people were happy about it. We’re shooting, obviously, on golf courses.

I can’t spoil anything. I can’t spoil all the guest stars or cameos in it. I can say that we’re shooting on golf courses with hundreds of extras, and they’re all so excited. I thought, 'Oh, wow, I didn’t know everybody was waiting for this.' But I’m getting a sense of that now."

When asked what it's like reuniting with Sandler and Christopher McDonald, who is back to play Happy Gilmore's greatest foe, Shooter McGavin, and what it's been like to revisit her first-ever movie, Bowen said:

"It is really weird. This is not a spoiler, but because there are flashbacks, they have to put me in the hair and the clothes from then, which are not my faves.

It’s fun because they also get to de-age me, which I’ve never gotten done. I’m like, 'Cool, I can’t wait to see what that is.' There’s a lot of really fun stuff. And seeing Adam [Sandler] and Chris [McDonald], and even some of the crew was the same.

Adams is such a loyal, lovely person to work with, and he loves to take the people along with him from the get-go. Perry [Andelin Blake], our production designer, has been with him since Happy Gilmore, and he looks exactly the same."

Kyle Newacheck (Murder Mystery) is directing the sequel from a script by Sandler and Tim Herlihy. There are no details about the plot of the movie yet.

Sandler previously talked about the film, saying: “We’re going to do Happy Gilmore, thank you. This is happening. We’re getting ready to shoot it in New Jersey. We start in a couple weeks.

“It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down. People have been asking me for a long time. We’re really excited about it. We wrote our asses off. So many of the golfers are being nice and will be a part of it.”

Not all the cameos have been revealed, but we know that musical artist Bad Bunny is part of the Happy Gilmore 2 cast, along with Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, and Nick Swardson.

The film is currently in production. Are you looking forward to Happy Gilmore 2?
