JUMANJI: OPEN WORLD Trailer Unleashes the Video Game Heroes Into the Real World for Another Wild Adventure
Sony Pictures has dropped the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, and it looks like the franchise is about to flip its formula in a fun new way. Instead of pulling people into the game, this time the game is coming to them, throwing the fan-favorite group of video game avatars into the real world.
The trailer reunites Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan as the unlikely heroes players have come to love over the last two movies.
After the massive success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back for another round of over-the-top action, comedy, and the kind of body-swap insanity that helped turn the rebooted series into a global hit.
The modern Jumanji movies took the beloved 1995 classic starring the late Robin Williams and a young Kirsten Dunst in a completely different direction by transforming the magical board game into a video game.
Now, Open World shakes things up once again by unleashing Johnson's Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Hart's Franklin "Mouse" Finbar, Black's Professor Shelly Oberon, and Gillan's Ruby Roundhouse into the real world. It looks like they're about to discover that reality comes with its own set of unexpected challenges.
Several familiar faces are also returning, including Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris, and Rhys Darby. Joining the cast this time around are Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes.
Jake Kasdan is back in the director's chair after helming the previous two installments. He also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.
The movie was originally set to hit theaters on December 11, but Sony has shifted its release to Christmas. That means Jumanji: Open World will arrive just days after the one-two punch of Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, a release window fans have already nicknamed "Dunesday."
It'll be interesting to see how audiences split their moviegoing plans during one of the biggest holiday box office battles in recent memory.
As for the trailer itself, it looks like exactly what fans of these movies are hoping for. It leans into the goofy premise, delivers plenty of laughs, throws in some fun action set pieces, and embraces the ridiculousness of watching these larger-than-life video game avatars navigate everyday reality.
