JURASSIC WORLD 2 Is Both a Sequel and JURASSIC PARK 5; It Leads to the Unexpected

There’s still so much that we don’t know about director J.A. Bayona’s Jurassic World 2, but from everything we’ve heard so far, it sounds like he has a solid plan to bring us something awesome. We still don’t have any story details, but in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, the director revealed that that Jurassic World 2 isn’t only a sequel — it’s also Jurassic Park 5. He explains:

“What we're doing is a sequel to Jurassic World, but it's definitely the fifth chapter of a longer saga. It's very interesting. It's always tricky, but you need to find a balance in what people expect to find, and the new stuff you're bringing to the story. And I think the story is looking for a connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park -- more than what Jurassic World did.”

Obviously, he’s not going to say what the connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park will be, other than the whole genetically engineered dinosaur thing, but it sounds like they are going to give us something new, refreshing, and unexpected. When asked about the story, Bayona explained that they are going to do something that the audience isn’t expecting.

“Sure. I think what this film does is it's the second chapter of the story that started in Jurassic World, and it's open to a third chapter too. It's very interesting in the way that we're approaching the story, and where we are leading the story. We're leading the story to a place that the audience is not expecting, and that's always exciting when you do a sequel.”

It’ll be interesting to see what unexpected place the story for this sequel takes us to. In a previous interview about what the sequel could possibly explore, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow said:

"[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island. That’ll get old real fast.
"And this isn’t something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in this movie, is that might be able to grow in more of these movies if they decide to make more of them, is: What if this went open source? It's almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?
"And Dr. Wu says in the film, when he's warning Dr. Mesrani, 'we’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur'. I think that’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand. I shouldn’t use the word universe, because people will think we’re making a Jurassic World universe -- we’re not."

Jurassic World 2 will most likely start production in early 2017 and is set to be released in theaters on June 22, 2018.
