Justin Lin is Set To Direct THE LAST DAYS OF JOHN ALLEN CHAU
Justin Lin, the man who helped turn Fast & Furious into the ultimate blockbuster franchise, is going back to his indie roots. According to Deadline, Lin has found his next project and is set to direct The Last Days of John Allen Chau.
The Last Days of John Allen Chau is based on the Outside Magazine article of the same name that was written by Alex Perry. The film follows Chau, “who believes he has been chosen to save the souls of the uncontacted tribe of North Sentinel Island, a protected site in the Indian Ocean where outsiders are forbidden. He embarks on a harrowing journey to proselytize the Sentinelese in his desperate search for identity, purpose and belonging.”
Lin is currently working on the adaptation of One-Punch Man for Sony, but he's been looking to get back to making smaller more intimate films. So, while the script for One Punch Man continues to be developed, Sony Pictures wanted to give Lin the opportunity to direct The Last Days of John Allen Chau and once he’s done with that, he will be able to jump in and shoot One Punch Man.
The script for The Last Days of John Allen Chau will be written by Ben Ripley, whose credits include the Jake Gyllenhaal time-travel thriller Source Code, Boychoir with Kathy Bates and Dustin Hoffman, and the Flatliners reboot with Elliot Page, Diego Luna, and Kiefer Sutherland.
The film promises to be an intense, heart-wrenching, and thought-provoking experience. Justin Lin is taking a break from those big-budget tent pole action films to bring us a daring and powerful indie film that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Lin was supposed to direct Fast X but exited the project early in production. After spending 15 years in that franchise, is good to see that he’s broken free and is ready to do some new and different films!
