Justin Theroux Gives Update On TROPIC THUNDER Spinoff Centered On Tom Cruise's Character Les Grossman

The 2008 action comedy Tropic Thunder was a huge hit with fans. With a script by Justin Theroux, Etan Cohen and Ben Stiller, with Stiller both behind the camera and in front of it alongside Jack Black, Tom Cruise, and Robert Downey Jr., it was a winning combination that made for an uproarious good time.

So it made sense that Paramount announced soon after its release that they’d be doing a spinoff focused on Cruise’s over-the-top mega-producer character, Les Grossman.

But that announcement came sixteen years ago, and aside from some chatter, we haven’t heard much, and we obviously don’t have the movie to show for it. But according to Theroux, the project isn’t completely dead.

In an interview with ComicBook to promote the release of Fallout Season 2 (streaming on Prime on December 17th), Theroux addressed the status of the Les Grossman spinoff.

“This has been something that has been kicked around in theory and in reality and there’s been a couple of attempts at points of entry. But, I think we all look forward to hopefully making that happen.

“That would be great, and I have some ideas for it, and some of those ideas have been expressed, but I can’t really give you any other update that there’s nothing currently. There’s no start date or anything.”

I’m sure it’s difficult to get Tom Cruise pinned down for a project as he’s usually booked several years out, and Stiller is a busy guy as well. But sixteen years is a little excessive. Although, these days, it’s never too late for a sequel that will put theatre-goers in seats. If and when it all pans out, we will be here to report it.
