Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick Caught Off Guard by the VOD Release of TROLLS: WORLD TOUR and Want Their Box Office Bonuses
Trolls: World Tour surprised everyone when it bypassed its planned theatrical release (due to the COVID-19 pandemic closing the theaters) and was released on VOD in homes throughout America. This ended up being a pretty successful gamble for the studio, as the sequel ended up making more money in its three-week VOD run than the original Trolls movie made in five months in the theater.
But the stars of the film, Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, were taken by surprise by the move. While I’m sure they were happy with the film’s success, things are a little murky when it comes to the stars’ box-office bonuses.
When a movie performs well in the box office, stars have pre-negotiated terms about the bonuses they receive from box office numbers. But this movie took a left turn and ended up opening on VOD out of necessity. So terms will have to be reworked and renegotiated. It’s all more complicated when the middle man is cut out, but the movie didn’t make as much in the at-home release as they were expecting it to in theaters.
I’m just glad I’m not the person that has to figure all that out, because I am just not a numbers girl. I’m sure the lawyers who represent Timberlake and Kendrick will get the best people on the case, though, and it will get worked out. I just hope we can get back to the theater soon! What movies are you most looking forward to seeing when you get back to the big screen?
