Kadabra Cards Can Once Again Be Printed for the POKEMON TCG
Here’s something I had no idea was a thing. Back in 2000, entertainer Uri Geller sued Nintendo saying that the Kadabra Pokémon TCG card used his image (via BBC). Now, something important to note is that Kadabra’s Japanese name is Yungerer and is based on Geller’s name. Also, a part of his act is using his mind to bend spoons and read minds.
Now, I think that this is stupid, but it happened, and as a result, Pokémon TCG fans have gone 20 years with no Kadabra cards. In fact, according to Bulbapedia, there have only been seven Kadabra cards printed (two of which are only in Japan). Naturally, this also caused problems for Alakazam, but it appears that they really lessened his presence as well, although, from what I can tell, he’s been turned into a Basic Pokémon for the most part.
Well, why is this relevant now? Geller has come out on social media and said that he is “releasing the ban.” He is now going to allow Nintendo (or rather The Pokémon Company in all actuality) begin creating new Kadabra cards. This is great news! Thank you, Geller, for finally growing up and realizing that this shouldn’t have been a problem.
