Karen Allen Talks About the Scene From RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK That She Wanted to Change
This summer’s blockbuster Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was such a fun final adventure for our favorite archaeologist and professor, Dr. Jones. The film ended [spoiler alert] with Indy (Harrison Ford) reuniting with the love of his life, Marion Ravenwood, played by Karen Allen. She returns to care for him after he defies death and comes back to the future after an epic time-traveling adventure. This is a throwback to a scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and it happens to be one that Karen Allen took issue with way back then.
The actress spoke about the scene back in a 2012 interview with Entertainment Weekly (via /Film), where she revealed:
"Well, I remember being very, very disappointed that in the script, he falls asleep. I was like, 'Really?' [Laughs] 'He's really going to fall asleep here? After all we've been through.' And I think I may have even said, 'Can we change that?'"
But she was vindicated when she watched the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark again prior to shooting Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and she was pleased to see that Spielberg made sure the audience knew that Indy and Marion had a proper reunion. She said:
"[I] realized Marion wakes up in the bed by herself [the next morning] and she reaches back and pulls her nightgown off the top of the bed. Which I had completely forgotten about, and I thought, 'Oh, they probably did have their romantic moment.' I had remembered it as being this moment that didn't happen, when in fact it didn't happen on screen. But then Steven had made sure that in that very first beat, we see that I grab my nightgown off of the top of the bed."
In the final scene of Dial of Destiny, we see Indy retrieving his hat from a bedside clothesline. This movie was full of fan service, and it ended just like we expected and hoped for Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be available to stream on August 28th.
