Karen Gillan Says GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 May Be Nebula's Final Chapter

Karen Gillan has completed her work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it sounds like there’s a chance we may never see her in the role of Nebula again. The actress shared some of her thoughts on social media after her time shooting the film ended, saying:

And that’s a wrap on Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3!!!!!

I don’t know if Nebula will return beyond this, it’s possible that this is her final chapter. And if that’s the case, then I just want to say thank you to @jamesgunn for giving me such an interesting, complex and fascinating character to play.

I have enjoyed this exploration more than any other character I’ve played.

That was one hell of a decade.

Thanks for watching…

I hope that this isn’t the last time we see Nebula! She’s such a great character and I feel like there’s just so much more story out there in the MCU for her! Director James Gunn has made it clear that this next film will close out the story he set out to tell over the course of a trilogy and we just have no idea what characters will come out of it and be able to continue their journey.

Gunn previously teased that Nebula has a “pretty huge” role in this third film, and when previously talking about her journey and future in the franchise, she said:

“In Avengers, she had to face the source of her abuse, then actually watch him get eliminated from her life. I’m sort of thinking about future Nebula in the sense like, ‘What is she going to be like now that that person’s abuse has gone out of her life? How is she going to build herself back up again?’ Because it’s an odd feeling, I think, for someone who’s been abused by a parent, because they still love them and they’re sad that they’re gone, but also they hate them and they’re glad that they’re gone…I’m interested to maybe try and take her to a place now where she’s starting to rebuild her life.”

Gillan also said that she feels “sympathy and empathy” towards Nebula and revealed that she read research on abusive families and explained how it helped her understand the dynamic between Nebula, Gamora, and Thanos:

“I was able to use a lot of psychology essays on that character, because she’s someone who has dealt with abuse from her father from such a young age. Not to make it too heavy, but he pitted the siblings against each other — she would be inferior and the scapegoat, while the other one was the golden child. It’s actually a quite common thing to happen within families and siblings. I don’t have any siblings, so it’s something I really had to read up on.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be released on May 5th, 2023
