Karl Urban Confirms That Alex Garland Actually Directed DREDD
I've heard a few times over the years from people that Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) was the person who actually directed Dredd, not Pete Travis. Well, in a recent interview with JoBlo, Karl Urban confirmed that this is actually true!
“A huge part of the success of Dredd is in fact due to Alex Garland and what a lot of people don’t realize is that Alex Garland actually directed that movie.”
You may or may not remember the rumors of Pete Travis being removed from the film and barred from the editing room. Well, that apparently actually happened and Garland took over. Dredd was such a great movie, and now we know one of the reasons why. It just wasn't Garland's great script, it was also his directing skills.
Karl went on to say that he's still open to reprising his role on the Judge Dredd series Mega-City One, which is currently in development:
"The rights holders [Producer Brian Jenkins and Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley ] are in their process of developing their show called Mega City One and we’ve had many discussions and the ball’s in their court. Hopefully, they get it together and are able to deliver more of what the audience wants and it would certainly be a privilege and a pleasure to be a part of it."
Like many of you, I would love to see Karl Urban back in the role of Judge Dredd and I hope this series eventually happens.
