Karl Urban Responds to Fans Wanting Him to Replace Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones
Ever since Harrison Ford wrapped up his run as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, fans have been throwing around ideas about who could possibly step into the fedora next.
One name that keeps popping up is Karl Urban, and honestly, it’s easy to see why. The guy has the rugged action-hero energy, the charisma, and he already looks like he could punch a Nazi while delivering a sarcastic one-liner.
But while fans seem ready to hand him the whip, Urban himself doesn’t sound interested in replacing Ford. The conversation started when comedian and actor Steve Byrne posted on X that there was only one actor who could carry the franchise forward. Byrne wrote:
“There’s truly only one man that could replace Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones…@KarlUrban HE WOULD CRUSH IT.”
That instantly got fans talking, but Urban quickly responded with a classy answer that pretty much sums up how a lot of people feel about the character:
“While I appreciate the vote of confidence-Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones – he is irreplaceable !”
Urban has made it clear over the years that he absolutely loves the Indiana Jones franchise. During an appearance on Popcorn Podcast with Leigh and Tim, he talked about how Raiders of the Lost Ark had a huge impact on him growing up. What connected with him most was how human Indy felt compared to a lot of action heroes of that era.
He explained that Ford’s version of the character wasn’t “bulletproof,” and that Indy could go from confidently controlling a situation to completely terrified in a matter of seconds. That vulnerability is a huge reason the character became such an icon in the first place.
Urban’s fandom goes even deeper than that. He included Raiders of the Lost Ark among his five favorite movies on Rotten Tomatoes, and he even named his second son after Indiana Jones. So yeah, the guy definitely understands why people are protective of the character.
As for the future of the franchise itself, Lucasfilm still doesn’t appear to know exactly what comes next. Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously spoke about whether Indiana Jones could continue after Ford’s departure.
She said: “But these are timeless movies, and Indy will never be done.” Kennedy continued: You never know. But we are all still here, Steven and Frank and I, and Harrison and George. So we get to say whether there’s going to be any more, or not.”
At the moment, it doesn’t sound like Lucasfilm is actively developing another Indiana Jones movie, but Kennedy’s comments make it clear the franchise isn’t being buried forever.
If the studio ever does decide to move forward with a new version of Indy, fans are definitely going to have opinions.
