Karl Urban Still Interested in Playing Judge Dredd Again and Wants to See More of Those Stories
Karl Uban was freakin’ awesome in the role of Judge Dredd in writer Alex Garland and director Pete Travis’ 2012 film Dredd. It just baffles my mind that no one jumped on making a sequel to that film. It was the perfect Judge Dredd movie that was gritty, violent, and visually stunning. It’s one of the best comic book adaptations made, but we never got to see more stories told with Urban’s version of the character.
Over the years, Urban has consistently said that he would love to come back and reprise his role. Unfortunately, the opportunity has never presented itself. But, that doesn’t mean he’s still not interested in playing Dredd, it’s a dream that he’s obviously not giving up on. He is still very much enthusiastic about playing the character.
In a recent interview with GQ, he expressed how big of a fan he is of Judge Dredd and that even if he didn’t get to play the character again, he still wants to see more Judge Dredd stories.
"I certainly would be interested to revisit the character. There's such a great depth of material there that was created by John Wagner and various writers over the years, particularly the stories revolving around Judge Death and lots of great stories. To me it doesn't bother me if I get the opportunity to play Dredd again or if it's someone else. I just want to see those stories."
As of right now, I don’t know of any Judge Dredd projects in development. There was a series in development years ago that Urban was hoping to be a part of, but nothing ever happened with that.
At this point, I don’t think we’ll ever see Urban in the role of Dredd again. I hope I’m wrong, though.
