Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey Were Really "Pissed Off" at Each Other in HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN TEN DAYS

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the classic rom-com, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. This is a movie I saw in the theater, bought when it came out, and have watched countless times over the years. It’s such a feel good flick with a fun story, two on-point comedic actors with incredible onscreen chemistry, quotable lines, and a lot of heart.

To celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary, the stars of the film, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, got together to do an Instagram live, where they got to reminisce, answer questions, and reveal never-before-told stories from behind the scenes.

One story they told was about the filming of the scene toward the end of the movie, where the two main characters find out that they had both been lying to each other about their intentions in the relationship. Hudson’s character Andie was using McConaughey’s Ben as the subject of an article titled “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days,“ and Ben had a bet going with his boss to prove that he could make a woman fall in love with him in the same time span.

The two find out, and a drunken fight ending in a loud and angry back-and-forth karaoke version of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” ensues.

When talking about shooting the scene, Hudson said:

“I remember, that scene was actually kind of hard for us because it was like, at least for me, maybe and maybe not for you. But, sort of walking the line of, like clearly this is this big moment in the movie, but it was so…”

McConaughey then grinned, knowing exactly what Hudson was trying to say, and he continued:

“Underneath, probably for things that were happening in character and out of character and off-set, we'd gotten under each other's skin a little bit. We were legitimately kind of pissed off at each other in a really cool way. It was that line of like you can go, but just remember this ends up with charm, they end up coming together. I remember having a few scenes like 'OK, that worked. But can we inject a little more of the charm and the love and the desire and the lust in there?”

He went on to add:

“I think by that time, we had added up all the ways we had wronged each other.”

I’m sure that happens after long days and nights shooting movies under certain circumstances. What they ended up with though, was a great movie with great chemistry, so they did something right. It’s also cool to see them back together, and to know the annoyances on-set didn’t ruin their friendship.

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is available to watch on Paramount+.
