Kate Hudson Turned Down Role Of Mary Jane in Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN Movies - "It Would Have Been Fun to Be Her"
Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson (Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) has had a fantastic career with many memorable performances, but this year, she has reflected on a few projects that got away.
Earlier this year, she lamented about having to lose out on the leading role in The Devil Wears Prada due to scheduling conflicts, and now she is talking about another role that she thinks would have been fun.
During Monday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Hudson confirmed that she was offered the role of Mary Jane in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy that eventually went to Kirsten Dunst. She turned down the part, but said of her decision:
“It’s one of those things where I look back like, ‘That would have been nice to be in a “Spider-Man” movie.’ But at the same time, I did a movie called ‘Four Feathers.’ I got to meet Heath Ledger who became a very good friend and I got an experience that I would have never had.”
Four Feathers released a few months after Spider-Man, and was a war drama starring Hudson, Heath Ledger, Djimon Hounsou and Wes Bentley. Hudson went on to say:
“A part of me is like, ‘Life happens exactly the way it’s supposed to.’ And so, I’m grateful for it. But I do look at it and I’m like, ‘Aw, it would have been fun to be [Mary Jane].’ It doesn’t feel good to talk about it ’cause the people who are in the movie are the right people and your circumstances in life happen the way they happen.”
That’s a good way to look at it. Hudson’s career didn’t suffer from the decision, and each project came out the way it was supposed to. But it is always fun to hear about what could have been.
