Kate Mara Faces Cosmic Terror in First Trailer For Sci-Fi Thriller THE ASTRONAUT

Signature Entertainment has released the first trailer for The Astronaut, a new sci-fi thriller from filmmaker Jessica Varley, who is making her feature directorial debut.

The story follows astronaut Sam Walker, played by Kate Mara, who survives her first space mission against all odds. After being found alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, she’s placed under strict NASA surveillance by her adoptive father, General William Harris, played by Laurence Fishburne.

Sam is taken to a high-security facility hidden away in the woods for rehab and medical testing, where she reconnects with her husband and seems to be preparing for her next mission. But her recovery takes a dark turn when she begins to suspect that something otherworldly followed her home.

The official synopsis reads: “Humanity is about to learn we're not alone... When astronaut Sam Walker returns from her first space mission, she's found miraculously alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

“Required to be quarantined, her adopted father General William Harris places Sam under NASA surveillance in a high security house, isolated in the woods. Reunited with her husband, Sam appears to be re-acclimating and preparing for her next mission.

“When disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth, and the agencies meant to protect her are endangering her life. Not even those close to her can be trusted.”

Alongside Mara and Fishburne, the film also stars Gabriel Luna, Ivana Milicevic, and Macy Gray.

The Astronaut is produced by Brad Fuller, Eric B. Fleischman, Chris Abernathy, and Cameron Fuller. While the premise is intriguing, the movie has been met with mixed reactions so far, with critics suggesting it doesn’t quite land its potential.

But, if you’re into claustrophobic sci-fi thrillers that blend psychological tension with extraterrestrial mystery, this might be worth checking out. The movie is avilable in the UK now on VOD. No word on when it will be released in the US.
