Katherine Waterston and Tom Holland Zap into THE CURRENT WAR with Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon
I wrote about Christopher Nolan's The Prestige on its 10th anniversary recently, and one of the most interesting aspects of that movie is how it takes place on the fringe of the battle between Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and George Westinghouse over direct vs. alternating current. Now that story is getting the proper movie treatment of its own in The Current War, a new film by Me and Earl and the Dying Girl director Alfonso Gomez-Rajon. This thing has a heck of a cast already: Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Edison, Nicholas Hoult is playing Tesla, and Michael Shannon is playing Westinghouse. Now two more talented actors are plugging in to the project.
Deadline says that Katherine Waterston has joined the cast as Marguerite Erskine, Westinghouse's wife. You might recognize Waterston from her work in Inherent Vice, but she's about to get a big boost in notoriety when she appears in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them this month and Alien: Covenant next year. And THR reports that Tom Holland is in early talks to board the project as Edison's assistant. Holland needs no introduction for people reading this site: he stole Captain America: Civil War with his appearance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and will reprise that role in next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
I don't know the specifics of this battle over the currents very well, so I'm excited to see it brought to the big screen in a movie with such a great cast. There's no release date for The Current War scheduled yet, but filming is supposed to begin next month.
