Kathleen Kennedy Discusses the Future of STAR WARS and Says Lucasfilm Needs to Create a Whole New Saga

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently sat down with Total Film to discuss the future of Star Wars films. With Star Wars Celebration in full swing, of course, she’s going to be asked about what’s going on with the film side of Star Wars!

During the interview she was asked about Star Wars movies and if there was still movement on them and she teased the exciting projects that they have cooking, saying: “Of course, they've been in movement all along. As we leave the saga, we have all this great, exciting work happening on the television side that informs so much about where we're going. We want to be very intentional about that. And we have great talent that we're working with – people who care so deeply about what the next iteration of Star Wars is and about getting people back into movie theaters, so we can really come out with a bang. That's important to us.”

They’ve got several projects in development including one that’s being developed by Taika Waititi, and that film will be the next to be released. It will be the first Star Wars movie in four years and Kennedy confirmed that the movie is shooting for a late 2023 release date.

Kennedy was then asked if there was any hesitancy in exploring the past Skywalker saga, and she said, “No hesitancy.” She then said, “We need to create a whole new saga. That takes a lot. There's a lot of conversation around that.”

While they are still enjoying playing with these legacy characters from the original Saga, they are looking to step away from it and create something totally new. Those film projects could also come from Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins with Rogue Squadron, and Rian Johnson, who is still very much involved with Lucasfilm’s think tank.

The last question she was asked is if there was any future of Solo, to which she responded, “There's always a future for Solo!” So, that’s good news!

It’s going to be interesting to see what the future of Star Wars films will be and how they will go about building a new saga. In the meantime, I’ll keep enjoying the live-action and animated shows that they’re developing for Disney+!
