Keanu Reeves Offers Update on BILL & TED 3 - "We’re Closer and We’re Not Closer"

There's been talk of a Bill & Ted 3 movie being in development since 2010, and after all that time it doesn't seem like it's any closer to going into production. Over the years, both Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves have offered updates on the film. Sometimes it seems like things are progressing, while at other times there seems to be no movement at all.

IGN Had the opportunity to talk to Reeves recently and they pointed out that in 2014 the actor told them, “We’re closer, but we’re not closer.” Then in 2015 they asked him about the film again and he said, "We're closer, we're closer." Now he has reverted back to his first statement, "We’re closer and we’re not closer."

When I read that I just can't help but hear Reeves saying it as his character Ted "Theodore" Logan, and it makes me laugh. He went on to say that they are "expecting another draft and hopefully we’ll get closer.”

Regardless of the lack of movement, the actor is still very enthusiastic about the project. They are just taking their time with “the actualization of that concept.”

“We’re just trying to get the script together. We’re trying to get the story right. We’re working with this studio so we have a little bit of support, in a sense of like if the material comes through we’ll try and make this picture. We’re really just still trying to get the story right."

Hey, at least they are still trying, and they are trying to give fans the best sequel possible. That's got to count for something. Reeves previously talked about the story for the film a few years back saying:

"It's kind of like… I call it 'gravity,' you have to get this mass together to make it happen. In terms of the writers' voices being too peculiar, in this case no. I think they've really crafted something that's funny. [Bill and Ted have] been weighed down by the burden of having to save the world by the song, and they just can't write it. They're losing their wives and their children, they're losing their families.
"Yeah, they're just like, 'Dude, we have to write the song!' The future comes back and says if you don't write the song by this certain time the universe is going to unravel and history and everything is going to change and dinosaurs are gonna walk the Earth. Jesus is playing baseball! All sorts of weird things start unraveling and wormholes are twisting. We have to kind of bring order back, and it's connected into bringing our families together by writing a song."

He also offered a description of a scene in the movie:

"It's edgy. There's a great scene where Bill and Ted are in jail and we're seeing our future us's and they're all tatted and hard. They're like, [tough sounding] 'What's up, dude? Hey dude. Hey guy.' 'Stop calling me dude!' They want to beat up Bill and Ted because they've inherited the life that they f**ked up. They're miserable and they hate Bill and Ted. There's some funny stuff!"

I have no idea if this is still the direction they are taking the story, but it sounds like a hilariously fun concept for a sequel. This sequel needs to be made, and I hope they finally get around to making this thing because I want to see it!
