Keanu Reeves Remains Hopeful About CONSTANTINE 2 as "Another Draft" of the Script Arrives

t’s been nearly two decades since Keanu Reeves put on the trench coat of DC’s supernatural detective in Constantine, and fans are still holding out hope that a sequel will finally happen. Reeves just shared an encouraging update that suggests progress is moving along, even if slowly.

"Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We're waiting. We're gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too."

The original 2005 film, directed by Francis Lawrence, introduced audiences to John Constantine, a chain-smoking, world-weary exorcist who finds himself caught in a battle between angels and demons.

Reeves starred alongside Tilda Swinton, Rachel Weisz, and Djimon Hounsou, and while the movie wasn’t a massive box office hit at the time, it slowly grew into a cult favorite. Lawrence is also set to return for the sequel.

Lawrence said earielr this year film that it’s “closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing.”

The director also told said that they have something “really cool” in the works, adding that he, Reeves, and producer Akiva Goldsman “are super, super excited about it.”

Reeves previously said: "It's almost like an open playground that we can hopefully cook something up and play in, and I guess get out of the playground and prepare a meal.

“But I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully, it can happen. You don't know how these things go. But I'm definitely going to try my darnedest to try and realize that dream."

Earlier this year, Peter Stormare, who memorably played Lucifer in the first film, shared his own perspective on why development has been such a back-and-forth process.

"[There's] a lot of back and forth, because... I think Keanu [Reeves] is not so happy with the scripts. It took a long time for [the original] to become a cult movie.

“It really worked, and it will work on the audience again. You don't have to add a lot of action and shootouts. You have other movies.

“Don't turn it into big Marvel... [Don't turn it] into us flying around in harnesses all the time and shooting each other up. Don't bring in the big guns. Let it be."

The sequel was first announced in 2022, but updates have been scarce. By late 2024, the first draft of the script was reportedly finished, but little progress seemed to be happening behind the scenes. Reeves’ latest comments, however, show that the project isn’t dead and that the team is still actively working to get it in front of the studio.

For now, Constantine 2 doesn’t have a release date, but with Reeves keeping the torch lit, fans can still hold out hope that John Constantine will return to the big screen.
