Keanu Reeves Says Tim Miller’s Untitled Time Loop Shark Thriller Is Basically “Groundhog Day” With Sharks
If someone pitched you a movie that mashed together Groundhog Day, killer sharks, and a time loop thriller starring Keanu Reeves, there's a good chance you'd want to buy a ticket immediately.
That's exactly the kind of wild concept Reeves is teasing for his upcoming collaboration with Tim Miller, and it sounds like it's going to be a blast.
The project, which was previously known as Shiver, still doesn't have an official title, but Reeves recently offered a perfectly simple description while speaking with Collider about what convinced him to sign on. He said: “Sharks. Time machine. Groundhog Day.”
The sci-fi thriller follows a "smuggler in the middle of a deadly double-cross while on a job in the Caribbean Sea." Things only get worse from there.
The official synopsis continues: “Surrounded by bodies, hostile mercenaries, and bloodthirsty sharks, the man finds himself in a time loop and scrambling to break the cycle.”
This sounds like a fun twist on the time loop genre. Instead of reliving the same ordinary day over and over, Reeves' character is apparently trapped in an increasingly dangerous nightmare where every reset means another chance to outsmart mercenaries, survive shark attacks, and hopefully figure out how to escape the loop.
Miller has already proven he can deliver inventive action with Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate, so it'll be interesting to see what he does with a concept this over-the-top.
The cast joining Reeves includes Callie Cooke (The Stranger), Stefan Kapičić (Deadpool), Steven Waddington (Sleepy Hollow), Nicholas Duvernay (The White Lotus), Abraham Popoola (Cruella), Anastasia Safonov, and Bobby Holland Hanton (Thor: Love and Thunder).
The screenplay comes from Ian Shorr, whose previous credits include Splinter and Infinite. Earlier descriptions of the film compared it to Edge of Tomorrow and The Shallows, which is a fitting combination based on everything we've heard so far.
Warner Bros. still hasn't revealed an official title or release date, but with Reeves teasing the project in such a memorable way, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.
