Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele, Keanu, Schmigadoon!) has signed on to join the cast of the Warner Bros. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory origin film Wonka. The film will center around the origin story of Roald Dahl’s famed Willy Wonka character. It has not yet been revealed who Key will play in the film.

Deadline reports, “Wonka will focus on a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory.” Key joins Timothée Chalamet who is singing and dancing in the title role. Paul King will direct from the screenplay he wrote with Simon Farnaby.

Key is a fantastic actor, and he brings a light humor to anything he’s in, so I am excited to see him join this cast. I also love the book and original film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so it will be cool to see what this new story will look like.

Wonka is currently in production, and is set to hit theaters on March 17, 2023.
