Keith David and I Talk About THE LAST KIDS ON EARTH, His Hope of Bringing GARGOYLES Back, and More
The Last Kids on Earth from Atomic Cartoons and Netflix dropped its second season today and with season two comes some amazing additions to the voice cast including Keith David. I was given the lucky opportunity to talk to David about the show, including why people should give it a try, as well as touching on some of his previous works. It should surprise absolutely no one that Gargoyles is still a very high priority for the man and it should make all of us giddy with excitement and demand that Disney bring it back.
Tommy: Keith, it is an absolute honor to get to ask you any questions. I've loved so many of your roles. Which of your roles do you think has been the most iconic?
Keith: That would be a difficult question to answer. It would be you considering them iconic, I was just simply doing my job. King in Platoon, Childs in The Thing, Kirby in Dead Presidents, Bishop in Greenleaf, I’ve had a lot of fun roles.
Tommy: In The Last Kids on Earth, I understand you play a character named Thrull. Can you describe your character as you see them? What has been your favorite part of voicing Thrull?
Keith: It has been a great experience voicing Thrull. Being a part of something new and innovative. We don’t usually see “cartoons” based on an apocalypse story, that’s a serious subject. But I love tackling a serious subject with so much fun. And the journey the writers take us on is incredible.
Tommy: What have been some of the highlights of working on The Last Kids on Earth?
Keith: The highlight for me was finally seeing it and getting to air it. While you are doing it, it is very fun. I’m an actor and grown man. If you see some of the stuff we do in the booth to get in character, it’s very fun. The highlight is being able to do the job.
Tommy: Were you familiar with Max Brallier's books the show is based on? If not, have you gone back and read them over to prepare?
Keith: No I have not, but my kids love them and I certainly intend to.
Tommy: Is this a show that you think adults will enjoy as well as children? What is an aspect of the show you would talk about to draw in people who think it's just another cartoon for children?
Keith: Certainly, some would. I particularly like smart cartoons and comedy. Some of the ways the characters finesse their way out of situations is just fun and clever. It’s a very smart show, and would be a big draw to any adult. It appeals to the kid in all of us.
Tommy: Is there a project that you're really hoping to be a part of either one that you've heard of or even one you hope happens?
Keith: Two. I really want to be a part of Spawn when it comes back. And it is my great hope that we are able to bring back Gargoyles. That would be so fun.
Tommy: A lot of people are hoping to see a Gargoyles reboot and I understand that you'd love to be a part of that, but there's another show of yours that I think deserves a reboot: The Cape. If The Cape was somehow being brought back to life, would you be interested in reprising your role as Max? You were one of my favorite parts of that show.
Keith: In a New York heartbeat.
Tommy: You've already covered who you think is your most iconic role, but I'm curious what your top 3 favorite roles have been.
Keith: Spawn, Goliath, and Bishop in Greenleaf are my favorites.
Tommy: Thank you so much for your time. Besides The Last Kids on Earth, are there any other upcoming or new projects that fans should be aware of?
Keith: I am working on a musical project based on the life of Joe Williams. Watch out for it.
