Keith David Says He’d Return for a SPAWN Reboot “In a New York Heartbeat!”
The long-gestating Spawn movie reboot continues to linger in development, but that hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming about what could be.
While creator Todd McFarlane keeps pushing to get the live-action project off the ground, many longtime fans still hold a special place in their dark little hearts for 1997’s animated series Todd McFarlane’s Spawn.
Now, the man whose voice defined the character for an entire generation is weighing in on whether he’d come back.
If you grew up watching the HBO series, you already know that Keith David took on the role of Al Simmons. His deep, commanding performance as Lt. Col. Al Simmons, also known as Spawn, gave the character a presence that practically jumped off the screen. For a lot of fans, David’s voice still echoes in their heads when they crack open a Spawn comic.
So when ComicBook sat down with David to talk about his new Amazon Prime Video series The Gray House, the conversation naturally turned to Hell’s favorite antihero and whether David would ever step back into the role.
He responded: “In a New York heartbeat!… People love that character. And especially in the animated series,” David said. He even had a little advice for fans who want to see it happen: “Make sure you tell them that when they start trying to reboot it.”
Over the past three decades, David has consistently made it clear that he’s more than willing to return if HBO decides to revive the animated series.
The original run of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn aired from 1997 to 1999 and wrapped after just three seasons and eighteen episodes. For a show that had barely scratched the surface of the source material, and there was still so much to tell
Looking back, David reflected on the series ending when it did: “His life was cut off too short,” David recalled. “It’s too bad someone didn’t have the foresight to keep it going, because I believe it would still be going. Yeah. So many great stories.”
Todd McFarlane’s Spawn comic has been running since 1992 and has built an expansive supernatural mythos filled with demons, angels, assassins, and apocalyptic stakes. There was and still is a massive well of material that an animated series could draw from.
Back in the late ’90s, Todd McFarlane’s Spawn was carving out space for adult animation in a way that felt ahead of its time. The tone was dark, violent, and unapologetically serious, and David’s performance anchored it all.
Meanwhile, the live-action Spawn reboot continues to inch along in development. It’s a project fans have been waiting on for decades, with McFarlane championing it every step of the way.
Whether that version ever materializes is still up in the air, but one thing seems certain. If producers ever decide to revisit the animated world of Spawn, they won’t have to look far for their leading man.
Keith David is ready to reprise his role!
