Kel Mitchell Wants to Return for MYSTERY MEN 2 and Has an Idea to Pitch to Ben Stiller

The 1999 action fantasy comedy Mystery Men was a box office flop that has gone on to gain some viewership in a cult classic fashion over the past 24 years. The movie boasted a crazy good cast that included Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Paul Reubens, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Geoffrey Rush, and more, but the story was pretty cheesy, and we didn’t even have legit superhero movies yet for this to play off of in a funny way.

But it can be looked more kindly upon now, farther from the sting of the box office loss, and one star of the film, Kel Mitchell, also of Good Burger fame, wants to return to make a sequel, and he has ideas.

In a recent appearance at Connecticut's 90s Con, Mitchell told ComicBook:

"Shout out to Mystery Men. Shout out to Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Janeane Garofalo. Such a great film."

He said that fans have asked him over the years about a sequel, and he said he’d love to do it:

"I want it. I've asked Hank Azaria about it. I've got a fun idea for that one, too. We're gonna be talking to Ben about that."

When asked to reveal his mysterious idea for the Mystery Men sequel, Mitchell teased:

"Let's just say 'origin story.' You know, we were the first superhero team-up before The Avengers and all those [superhero movies] started doing that."

However, Azaria just recently told CB that he doesn’t think a Mystery Men 2 could ever happen, saying:

"We already tried that [and] we failed rather miserably, really. We have a cult following, but the box office at the time didn't agree. Usually, Hollywood doesn't [give you] a second bite at that apple, do they?"

Surprisingly, Stiller, who reprised his iconic role as Derek Zoolander in 2016's Zoolander 2, and faced an unfortunate slump in the box office, also told ComicBook he's "all for" returning to Champion City.

"I had fun doing it. Yeah, it would be a blast. It was a really, really fun cast. And there's still some rage and fury inside me somewhere, I think."

I mean, I don’t know that this is a super sought-after project, and I know it would be a hard sell for the studio. But I do love this cast, and I think it would be fun to see them reunite.

What do you think? Would you watch a Mystery Men 2? Mystery Men is currently streaming on Peacock.
