Kelsey Grammer Talks FRASIER, Possible Return To CHEERS and Wanting To Work with Ted Danson Again
I don’t know about you, but I’ve really been enjoying the Frasier reboot on Peacock. It’s been enjoyable getting reacquainted with Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane again after all these years. With the character now living back in Boston, I’ve wondered if we might see Frasier return to Cheers.
During a recent interview with Deadline, Grammer addressed this question and shared an idea of how they could revisit Frasier’s past in the new series. When asked about the possible return to Cheers, the actor said:
“I’m not sure the guys who wrote Cheers would want us to go back to Cheers. It’s like, let’s let that be where it is. It’s a monument in the minds of television history. But is it possible we might see someone from the old days at the bar? Maybe. I was just spitballing a little while ago about how it might be kind of fun to do a Christmas show next year, the Christmas of Cheers Past. Frasier could revisit scenes that he lived out before like when he had made a mistake. What could he do to fix it? [Laughs] I don’t know, it just seems like a good idea and it would be really funny. And [the original cast] wouldn’t even have to appear; it would just be old clips. But we’ll see.”
He did go on to say that he would love to work with Ted Danson again and bring him on the show, but that’s an idea they haven’t really cracked yet. He explained:
“You know, I love Ted [Danson] and working with him, so I’d love to do something with him. We just haven’t broken that idea yet.”
When asked about plans for a second season, Grammer said:
We’ve been kicking around some ideas but they mostly revolve around the idea of Frasier finding happiness and becoming a good father and having breakthroughs at college. Maybe Frasier could become an important person in somebody’s life [as a professor]? He’s always getting into trouble in one way or another so I’m sure that’s going to continue to happen. Who knows what’s gonna arise? We do have really talented writers who will come up with some ideas and we’ll discuss it. It’s a collaborative effort and I think we’re going to be fine but I have no beans to spill at this point.”
I hope that the series continues and gets a new season, and it would be really great to see some of the old Cheers gang again at some point. It would be a shame if Frasier didn’t include some of them at some point.
The show follows Frasier Crane “in the next chapter of his life as he returns to Boston with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge and an old dream or two to finally fulfill. Frasier has re-entered the building!”
Joining Grammer in the series we have Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier’s son Freddy; Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy turned university professor Alan; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve; and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew David. Bebe Neuwirth will also reprise her role as Dr. Lilith Sternin.
