Ken Watanabe Joins Ryan Reynolds in DETECTIVE PIKACHU

So, respectable actor Ken Watanabe has been cast in Legendary Picture's upcoming Pokemon film Detective Pikachu. This movie is bringing together a pretty solid cast and for their sake... I hope it's good!

I'll be honest... I'm not really that excited about this, but maybe when I actually see what the movie will look like, I'll change my mind. Watanabe joins the previously cast Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies).

The story of Detective Pikachu centers around Smith’s character’s father getting kidnapped. He teams up with Pikachu (Reynolds) to help find him. Newton plays a journalist who helps them on their quest. Ken Watanabe will play a new character created for the film called Detective Yoshida.

The movie is being directed by Goosebumps director Rob Letterman from a script that is being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls). Detective Pikachu will be the first film in a planned franchise centering on the character. The story for the game that the movie is based on is described as follows:

The game follows a peculiar talking Pikachu who, despite not being as powerful and nimble as other Pikachu of his kind, is rather intelligent and claims to be a great detective. One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who is able to understand what he is saying. Thus, the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.

Watanabe is best known for his work in films like Inception, and The Last Samurai, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also had roles in Transformers: Age of Extinction and Godzilla.
