Kevin Feige Reveals Marvel’s Big Plan for AVENGERS: SECRET WARS and the MCU’s Future

Marvel’s Multiverse Saga is heading toward its biggest collision yet, and Kevin Feige has offered one of the clearest hints so far about what Marvel Studios hopes to accomplish with Avengers: Secret Wars.

It sounds like the film won’t simply bring the current MCU era to a close. We know there was a possibility that Marvel was looking at Secret Wars as an opportunity to reshape its cinematic universe and open the door to something new.

Feige recently discussed the Marvel Premier Collection edition of Secret Wars and reflected on what makes the comic event such an important piece of Marvel history.

The story brings different parts of the Multiverse crashing together before ultimately rebuilding reality into something that can carry Marvel forward.

Feige explained: “They invent something entirely new, seamlessly picking up where the old universe left off, but branching out in all-new, all-different directions.”

That concept certainly sounds relevant to where the MCU is currently headed. Years of alternate realities, branching timelines, incursions, and multiversal chaos have been pushing Marvel toward a massive breaking point.

According to Feige, the studio plans to take a similar philosophy into its own version of Secret Wars. He said: “We do the same thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe… That cycle continues as we head toward the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s own version of Secret Wars.

“Like Loki gathering up stray branches of the timeline at the end of all things, we’ll pick up the threads of Hickman and Ribic’s run and all those who came before and weave a new story inspired by the vast tapestry of our comics and films.”

Feige also teased plans to bring various characters into the story in ways that audiences won’t expect. Considering how much Marvel history is potentially available to Secret Wars, that leaves the filmmakers with a ridiculous amount of material to play with.

The movie’s actual story remains under wraps, but Marvel Studios is expected to pull significant inspiration from the acclaimed Secret Wars comic run created by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic.

That version of the story takes place after the Multiverse has been destroyed and introduces Battleworld, a patchwork reality made from pieces of different worlds. At the center of it all is Doctor Doom, who has become the incredibly powerful God Emperor Doom.

Marvel hasn’t confirmed that the movie will directly adapt those events, so it’s probably best not to assume we’ll see Hickman and Ribic’s story recreated beat for beat.

Feige’s comments actually suggest the opposite. Marvel seems to be interested in taking ideas from the comics, mixing them with years of MCU history, and creating its own version of the event.

That becomes even more interesting with Robert Downey Jr. set to play Doctor Doom, and Downey stepping into the role of one of Marvel’s greatest villains already gives Secret Wars a fascinating wrinkle. If Doom eventually reaches anything close to his God Emperor status from the comics, Marvel could have one hell of a threat waiting for its heroes.

The movie also has Anthony Russo and Joe Russo directing. The filmmaking duo previously guided the MCU through Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, so they certainly know what it takes to juggle huge casts and massive Marvel storylines.

What makes Feige’s comments especially interesting, though, is what they could mean for the MCU after Secret Wars. A Multiverse that gets destroyed, rebuilt, or otherwise rearranged gives Marvel an easy way to change the status quo while keeping whatever pieces it wants from the existing universe.

That could mean new characters, returning favorites, alternate versions of familiar heroes, or completely unexpected combinations. With the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers, and decades of Marvel movie history potentially in play, Secret Wars has the chance to get wonderfully crazy.

Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
