Kevin Fiege Confirms James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Script Will Be Used and Clarifies His Influence on Marvel's Cosmic Universe
There’s been a lot of talk about the script that James Gunn wrote for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 before he was fired. We’ve heard from a couple people close to the production that his script will be used when they start shooting it and now Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that. So at least Gunn’s influence and voice will be felt in the story.
Feige also sat down with CinemaBlend for an interview and they discussed Gunn’s role in helping build the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There were reports that Gunn was heavily involved with shaping the comic side of the MCU and Gunn himself even previously said:
"We talk about it all the time. It’s already a part of what I’m doing with Marvel and the conversations that Kevin and I have every day. When we’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and that story, that’s a story that will lead to other stories. It’s innate to the DNA that that’s the end of a trilogy but it’s the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe. That’s a part of what I’m doing now."
It sounds to me like he and Feige were shaping things together, but Feige has clarified that saying that the reports of Gunn being a major architect of the cosmic MCU were "blown out of proportion."
"His influence was Guardians. It was Guardians. It was his input on Guardians and the Avengers films, as you've seen in Infinity War, and on the Guardians 3script, which we’re still using. So you'll see that influence. I think online, sort of the notion of ‘architect across multiple cosmic things’ was slightly blown out of proportion."
So, I guess Gunn wasn’t really as involved with Marvel as we thought, or he was, and now that he’s gone Feige and his team have made some changes to what was previously being worked on and developed.
The studio has yet to hire a director to replace Gunn, but it’s going to be interesting to see who ends up stepping into those shoes.
What are you thoughts on Feige’s comments about James Gunn?
