Kevin Hart Steps Down As OSCARS Host

A few days ago, we learned that Kevin Hart was chosen to host the 91st Annual Academy Awards. I was pretty excited, as were most people who I saw reacting online. Hart is hilarious, and I think you have to have a pretty solid comedian to head a production as big as the Oscars. But today we have news that he has now stepped down from what he called his dream job amid the controversy that has exploded online regarding some ten year old social media posts that were offensive, specifically to the LGBTQ community.

Treading lightly here, I think that people should absolutely be held accountable for their actions, but I’m wondering if there’s a way to give people a pass on stupid things that were said so long ago. I know there were things I said when I was much younger that I would never say now, because as Oprah says, “when you know better, you do better.” I am so glad there was no social media when I was younger and stupider. And I’m glad no one is documenting all my mistakes to throw in my face later.

Kevin Hart issued these tweets today as his statement and apology:

“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's….this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.”

“I'm sorry that I hurt people.. I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart. Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again.”

It’s just too bad that it all went down this way. But hopefully it teaches everyone involved a lesson. And hopefully they give us a new host with the same caliber of humor and showmanship. Who would you like to see host the Oscars on February 24th?
