Kevin Smith Explains How Stan Lee's Legacy Will Live on in Sequel TWILIGHT OF THE MALLRATS
People find lots of reasons to argue about everything under the sun these days, but one thing I think we can pretty much universally agree on is our love for Stan Lee, the man behind our favorite Marvel comic book characters. He created these universes that we love, and even went on to make incredible cameos in several of the MCU films based on them. But the MCU is not the only film universe Lee has graced. He also appeared in director Kevin Smith’s 1994 cult classic Mallrats, which he was quoted saying was his favorite film to have appeared in.
In the movie, he played himself and lent a hand to Jason Lee’s heartbroken character Brodie, giving him a pep talk about love while he was pathetically roaming the mall. Stan Lee was there signing books, and Brodie, an avid comic and Stan Lee fan, was at the mall trying to get his girlfriend back into his life. Brodie’s friend TS (Jeremy London) told Stan his friend’s woes, and Stan made up a story to help get him back on his feet. It’s a great scene, and after Stan Lee’s 2018 passing, fans wondered if he would be mentioned in Smith’s upcoming sequel, Twilight of the Mallrats.
Smith recently talked to ComicBook about the sequel, and addressed the Stan Lee issue. He explains:
"We have a Stan Lee scene. Obviously, Stan Lee won't be in it because Stan's passed, but same Brodie Bruce and Stan plays a big part of it. So there's a, as a writer, like you know my daughter hates how into myself and my writing I am but sometimes as a writer I'm like 'oh that was clever, that's clever' and stuff like where you want to share it with people but you're like 'I'll wait until I can give it to everybody at once' but the Stan Lee scene in Twilight of the Mallrats is one of those moments that I consider like 'oh that's clever' and even if I wasn't me and I just liked my movies I would be like 'that's a good, what a good, what a way to do it, man.'"
That’s great to hear. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Smith, who is a huge Stan Lee fan. I’m excited for this sequel, if for nothing else, to see this tribute scene. Does this get you more excited to see the film?
Smith recently revealed he is finished writing the script, and we are waiting for the quarantine to resolve to hear about a release date.
