Kevin Smith Offers Update on His GREEN HORNET Animated Series - "It's Like that Pixar S**t"

Back in 2020, it was announced that Kevin Smith was developing a Green Hornet animated series. It’s been a while since we’ve had an update in the project, but Smith recently offered some new details

He’s developing the show with WildBrain and it will target a family audience. It was previously revealed that the series will be set in contemporary times, “following the adventures of a reimagined Green Hornet and Kato – now the grown son of the original Green Hornet and the daughter of the original Kato – as they partner to battle crime in Century City. It will also feature the Green Hornet’s ultra-high-tech car, Black Beauty.”

On a recent episode of Smith’s Fatman Beyond podcast Smith shared some info on what’s going on with the series and raved about the animation, saying it’s “phenomenal” and that it’s “like that Pixar Sh*t.” He said:

"I don't know if we can say who we are working for, but, the production company, they announced this a long time ago. We've been working with the folks at WildBrain putting together 10 episodes of a Green Hornet cartoon kids. That's what me an Marc have been working on. It's fun! The animation is phenomenal. It's like that Pixar s***. It's like they took a 2D drawing and blew it up. We've been working on that. We can't say who it's potentially for. But, once we hand in our scripts at the end of March, or whatever? Then, we'll know if the people who paid for the scripts want to move forward with the show."

When previously talking about the animation style of the series, Smith compared it to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse saying:

"But it's so gorgeous, and it's kid-friendly. Like it's a family show. So it's for like the 8-12 or family group or something like that. And it's very inspired by Into the Spider-Verse, very much so. Deeply. And in fact, like we're not doing a score, we're doing needle drop in terms of soundtrack. So it's not going to be like, 'Oh, there's that Green Hornet score.' We're going to grab music, current music, kind of it give it a certain hipness to it. But also, it's very ... yeah, it takes a lot of cues from Into the Spider-Verse. And the look of it is not ... As you look at it, you'd be like, 'Oh, I can see it there too.' Yeah. I love that movie."

It’ll be interesting to see how this turns out if it actually gets made.

The Green Hornet originated as a radio series created by George W. Trendle in the 1930s, telling the story of Britt Reid, the wealthy owner and publisher of the fictional newspaper, The Daily Sentinel. By day, Reid oversees his paper’s reporting on crime and injustice, but by night he dons his green mask and ventures across the city with his sidekick Kato to battle criminals and villains head-on.
