Kevin Smith Shares He Was Writing a KINGDOM KEEPERS Series For Disney+ and Explains Why it Didn't Happen

A couple of years ago Kevin Smith teased that he was writing a mysterious project that he said was the most “massive IP” that he had “ever been allowed to play with.” Smith has now finally revealed what that project was and it would have been awesome if it hadn’t been scrapped.

Smith was developing a Kingdom Keepers series for Disney+. The property is a series of children’s novels written by Ridley Pearson and the story follows the adventures of five teens who, by day, are holographic hosts in the Disney Theme Parks. By night, they battle Disney villains to keep them from taking control of the parks, the Disney entertainment empire, and the world.

It seems like the perfect series for Disney+! It was initially supposed to launch with the streaming service. But, thanks to one of those pesky Disney executives, the series was scrapped. Smith explained in a tweet:

“That was a blast to write 2 years ago. It was planned as one of the first shows to launch on what would become [Disney+]. Then a new exec was put in charge of the app and he killed KK. Said we used too much Disney IP in one project (every character in the park comes to life).”

That’s a bummer. Smith also explained that this was a passion project for him because he was one of those kids that grew up watching The Wonderful World of Disney. He went on to reveal that the unnamed executive who crushed the Kingdom Keepers ended up being the “guy who said ‘Let’s do Star Wars & Marvel Studios shows!'” Smith also added “as much as I would’ve liked to make my show, I’m much happier watching The Mandalorian and WandaVision.”

I would have liked to see this project happen! This seriously could have been an extremely fun series! The fact that they didn’t do it is shocking because this is the kind of thing that Disney fans would love to watch! You can read all of Smith’s Tweets regarding Kingdom Keepers below:
