Kevin Smith Weighs in on the Spider-Man Controversy

The whole Sony vs. Disney saga is slowly calming down. The initial volley has been released and we have all reacted. This also includes the one and only Silent Bob aka Kevin Smith. One of the loudest voices in Hollywood released his emotions on his podcast Fatman Beyond. Love him or hate him, Smith has a great way of expressing what he is feeling but also does it with facts relevant to the situation.

He and co-host Marc Bernardin recorded the day the news broke and they riffed about it. I will put some excerpts and quotes from it but check the whole episode out at the bottom of the post. The Spider-Man conversation starts around the 40 minute mark.

Here is Kevin’s stance on the break-up:

I don't know if my disappointment is, 'Aw man, Kevin Feige is not gonna do Spider-Man,' although that's a big part of it, my bigger disappointment is I liked him mixed up in the Marvel Universe, that's what's gonna fuckin' go away, That's what I'll miss. Some people are like, 'You're just rooting for one fuckin' corporate Death Star to beat another corporate Death Star,' and I'm like, look, they're gonna play funny board room games regardless and shit, big business, I just wanna fuckin' benefit a little bit. I got a little skin in the game. I like these fucking movies an awful lot, perhaps an unsafe amount, we'll see one day, you know what I'm saying? I just like them too much.

I loved what they were doing. They had a great thing fuckin' going on, and some people are like, 'Disney is being greedy and shit.' I don't see it that way. I see it as, they did all the work, they made those movies earn a fuck-ton of dough, they got 5% and the toys. They're coming back to the table, they’re asking for something more.

The dude has a point. From what I am reading, he is not the only one who feels that Sony is trying too hard to act like a big boy in this situation. If they cared about the fans at all they wouldn’t be attempting this stunt. How are they going to explain Peter’s suit if they can’t mention Tony Stark? They can’t have any of the villains that were in the first two movies reappear because their backstories revolve around Tony Stark.

Like we have been saying since the beginning, things aren’t as bad as they seem. One way or another we are going to get another Spider-Man movie. Whether it’s good or not is completely up to Sony. Let’s hope for the best.
