KEY & PEELE Ending After This Season
We all knew Key & Peele, the brilliant Comedy Central sketch series, would come to an end eventually, but I certainly didn't want it to be this soon. Keegan-Michael Key told The Wrap that the show's current season will be its last, but that doesn't mean their collaboration is entirely finished:
“This is our final season – and it’s not because of Comedy Central, it’s us. It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart. I compare it to Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We might make a movie and then do our own thing for three years and then come back and do another movie. I’m thinking we could do that every three years – take a year, go bang out a movie. That’s the plan right now.”
Over the past five years, the duo has produced some of the funniest and most iconic comedy sketches in TV history, winning a Peabody Award in the process. I imagine that it's incredibly tough to come up with sketches that meet their standard of excellence year after year, so while I'm not surprised that they're bringing the show to an end, the part of me that loves laughing at the show is disappointed we won't have more episodes to enjoy past this season. That being said, I'm definitely interested in seeing these guys branch out into movies (they already have Keanu, a reboot of Police Academy, and Jordan Peele's horror film in the pipeline), and apparently there's talk that they could be involved with another Comedy Central TV series sometime soon.
Their future is certainly bright, and while I'm saddened by the loss of the show, it'll just make me appreciate this season that much more. (They're killing it this year, by the way. I thought last season suffered a little bit, but practically every sketch this season has been fantastic. I'd highly recommend catching up if you haven't already.)
