KINGSMAN Director Matthew Vaughn Says It Was a Mistake "Putting a Batman Vibe Into the Superman World"
Matthew Vaughn, the director of Kick-Ass and Kingsman, has always wanted to make a Superman movie. He’s talked about his desire to make this film in the past, he actually made a pitch to Warner Bros. before Man of Steel got made, and he’s still talking about it. He still want to make this movie.
During a recent interview with The Wrap he said, "I was desperate to do a Superman film. Desperate. I pitched a big Superman movie before they made Man of Steel. I just got to work with Henry Cavill, which was lovely, on Argylle and he's unbelievable in it. I still think there's room for a new Superman film, but a proper Superman film. A colorful, fun Superman movie. Not a dark one."
I love the thought on a colorful and fun Superman movie. He previously described the film as "massive, uplifting, hopeful." He also shared that the “first film in the proposed trilogy was meant to take place almost entirely on Krypton, and focus on Jor-El and the impending explosion of Krypton. Though the alien planet would still face destruction, Vaughn and Millar’s take would have the event take place much later in the timeline, allowing Superman to grow up on his home planet and gradually become familiar with Earth, maturing into an adult before having to reckon with his loyalty to both planets.”
Vaughn went on to say in the recent interview that it was a mistake putting Superman into that dark and gritty world of Batman. He said, "I just thought it was a mistake putting the Batman vibe into the Superman world. I just think they're two separate — they're just not relatable in any way, in my mind. It should be fun. I mean, look, The Dark Knight was obviously different, and it made sense and it was brilliant, as a film and as a comic. But Superman was always... I loved the [Richard] Donner Superman movie, and I think Wonder Woman worked because, I think, Wonder Woman was basically remaking [Donner's] Superman in a weird way. Yeah, I love Superman."
I would love to see Vaughn get to make a new film version of Superman with Cavill. I’d love to see him play with Superman, I think he’d do some great things with it. I think he could pull off something special and different than anything that’s been done before with the character. What do you think?
