KPOP DEMON HUNTERS 2 Teased by Sony Animation Chiefs as Sequel Plans Begin to Take Shape
When KPop Demon Hunters first dropped, it straight up took over 2025. The HUNTR/X girls dominated streaming, fandom culture, merch shelves, and playlists worldwide.
But while Netflix reaped the rewards, Sony had previously sold off distribution rights during the pandemic. Now, with the dust settled and awards season in full swing, Sony is officially looking toward the future with KPop Demon Hunters 2.
It’s early. Like really early. In a recent conversation with THR, Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, presidents of Sony Pictures Animation, opened up about where things stand. The sequel isn’t racing into production just yet. Awards season has slowed momentum, and the creative wheels are only starting to turn.
Still, de Froberville made it clear there’s a lot on the table: “The world is so rich,” he observed. “The world of the demons and the pop star [element], what happened to Jinu. There’s so much we could expand into.”
That comment alone opens up possibilities. The first film built a universe that fused K-pop superstardom with Korean mythology and demon lore in a way that felt fresh and visually electric. Expanding that mythology could push the sequel into even bigger territory.
Belson and de Froberville even compared the potential evolution of KPop Demon Hunters 2 to the Spider-Verse films. That suggests two major goals: grow the world and level up the animation. Considering how slick the first movie already looked, that’s a high bar.
If you’re hoping to see it anytime soon, though, you might want to settle in. The report mentioned speculation about a 2029 release, and Belson made it clear that timeline doesn’t seem realistic. This is going to take time.
That shouldn’t surprise anyone. The original film had been in development since 2021 before finally landing last year. And now expectations are sky high.
The story needs to land. The songs need to hit. The animation has to top what came before. That’s a tall order, especially if the sequel dives deeper into the Korean mythology that inspired the demons, explores how the climax reshaped HUNTR/X, and unpacks what it all means for Jinu.
Speaking of Jinu, his arc may be the most important thread to pull on.
At the end of the first film, he redeemed himself in a way that flipped the Hunters’ entire belief system upside down. By sacrificing himself to save Rumi from the Demon King’s attack, Jinu proved he had a soul.
That revelation shattered generations of tradition because it means demons aren’t automatically beyond saving. If redemption is possible, the Hunters’ mission can’t stay the same.
A sequel could wrestle with that fallout in a big way. Do HUNTR/X change their methods? Does their purpose evolve? That moral shift alone gives KPop Demon Hunters 2 serious emotional weight to build on.
While fans wait, Sony and Netflix aren’t letting the franchise cool off. Merch is already everywhere, from action figures to LEGO sets, keeping HUNTR/X front and center in geek culture. The brand isn’t going anywhere.
The sequel may be years off, but the foundation is there for something even bigger than the original. When HUNTR/X finally returns, it sounds like they’ll be reshaping their entire world.
