Krysten Ritter Says Jessica Jones Nearly Appeared in DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Season 1

Marvel fans finally got what they’d been waiting for when Daredevil: Born Again brought Jessica Jones back into the mix in Season 2. But it turns out that comeback almost happened a lot sooner.

Krysten Ritter recently shared that Marvel had kicked around the idea of reintroducing Jessica during the first season of the series. It didn’t pan out at the time, but the possibility was very real and had Ritter more than ready to slip back into the role.

"There was some talk about me appearing in the first season," Ritter told Entertainment Weekly. "I think it's like two-and-a-half years ago that we first started hearing a whiff about it. So I was so excited.

“They were bringing back a lot of characters and I was like, I wonder if I could bring back Jessica. I have everything ready. I'll be ready. And then, lucky for me, they did bring Jessica back and I'm so thrilled.

“I kept the secret for a long time. I was asked about it constantly, and I just had to come up with new excuses and, I don't know, cute responses."

Instead of showing up early, Jessica’s return was saved for a bigger moment in Season 2, and it hits with some serious weight. When she reappears in Episode 6, titled “Requiem,” it marks her first on-screen appearance since Jessica Jones wrapped up its Netflix run in 2019, and a lot has changed.

Jessica isn’t just the same hard-drinking PI we remember. She’s stepped away from the chaos and built a quieter life outside the city, even raising a young daughter.

Of course, peace doesn’t last long in the Marvel world. When Mr. Charles’ crew targets her home, she’s pulled right back into the fight. That collision course eventually leads her to cross paths with Matt Murdock again, teaming up to take down Charles’ weapons operation, now tied to Wilson Fisk’s growing power.

Ritter also revealed how tricky it was keeping her return under wraps, especially while juggling another major project.

"Then when I knew I was coming back for Season 2, I was also filming Dexter: Resurrection at the same time. So that was a fun little diversion because when I got to New York, everybody assumed I was doing Daredevil and it really was a great way to throw everybody off the track. Little did they know I'd be going straight from Dexter to Daredevil."

It would’ve been interesting to see Jessica Jones show up in Season 1. Holding her back, though, gave season 2 a major jolt of energy and opened the door for new story layers, especially with her personal life now in the spotlight.

New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 are rolling out weekly on Disney+.
