KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS Director Travis Knight Set to Helm Stop-Motion Film THE NIGHT GARDENER
Laika’s CEO and President Travis Knight is set to direct another stop-motion animated feature film titled The Night Gardener, which was written by Ozark co-creator Bill Dubuque. Knight previously helmed Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee, both of which were fantastic movies!
Knight certainly has a talent for directing and storytelling, and this next film project of his sounds like it’s gonna be a good one.
The film is based on Dubuque’s original idea, described as “a gritty neo-noir folktale centered on a young man in rural Missouri, who’s fighting to keep his family together in the wake of a tragedy.” The movie is said to “paint an unflinching portrait of sacrifice, self-reliance and revenge.”
Knight said in a statement, “The Night Gardener is a beautiful and timeless story that quickens the pulse as often as it breaks the heart. Bill is a masterful storyteller. He’s crafted a lyrical world layered with complex characters, provocative ideas, and keenly felt emotion. It’s gonna be one helluva movie.”
Dubuque added, “I’m delighted that Travis Knight saw in The Night Gardener a story worthy of the time-intensive process and collective talent of LAIKA’s in-house artisans. LAIKA’s creativity and dedication to detail is, in my opinion, as close as one can come to conjuring storytelling magic.”
I’m looking forward to see how The Night Gardener turns out. I love the films that Laika produces, and I’m sure this one will be another great addition to their collection.
Laika is currently in production on Wildwood, which is set in Laika’s hometown of Portland, Oregon. Knight is also directing that animated film, which is based on the bestselling fantasy novel written by Colin Meloy.
