LANTERNS Episode 3 Teaser Shows Hal Jordan in His Green Lantern Mask and Introduces Laura Linney’s Guardian
HBO Max has released a teaser for the third episode of Lanterns, giving fans a quick look at Kyle Chandler in Hal Jordan’s complete Green Lantern costume, classic domino mask included.
The footage also introduces Laura Linney as one of the Guardians of the Universe, and her arrival could answer some major questions surrounding John Stewart.
Lanterns Episode 2, “Trust Fall,” is now streaming. It was a great episode, and the new footage offers a few clues about where the DC series is heading next.
We’ve already seen Chandler suited up as Hal Jordan several times, but one familiar piece of his Green Lantern look has been missing. The new teaser confirms that Hal did wear the traditional mask during his earlier days as a superhero, with archival news footage showing him in the complete costume.
That doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll see present-day Hal put the mask back on. For now, it looks like the footage is another glimpse into his past. The more interesting development may involve John Stewart and the Guardians.
Episode 3 will dig further into John’s troubled history as the Green Lantern recruit comes face-to-face with Linney’s Guardian of the Universe. John thinks he understands why the Guardians selected him, but the events of “Trust Fall” suggest he may not have the whole story.
Sinestro’s warning to Hal during the closing moments of episode 2 raises the possibility that the Guardians had another reason for recruiting the former Marine. Whatever they see in John, it could be connected to something much bigger than he currently realizes.
That puts Aaron Pierre in an interesting position as the series continues exploring John’s earliest days as a Green Lantern. Pierre recently talked about taking on the role and becoming the first actor to play John Stewart in live action:
“I immediately recognized the enormity of the opportunity and the gift that it is to engage with, first and foremost, this character and this world, and being the first live-action [John Stewart] is also something that I recognize the magnitude of.
“So it was very nerve-wracking, but I have a history and a habit of intentionally seeking out things that unnerve me.”\
With Hal’s Green Lantern past coming further into focus, John digging into his own history, and a Guardian finally stepping into the picture, episode 3 looks ready to reveal more about how the Green Lantern Corps operates and why John was chosen in the first place.
The mask is a cool bonus, especially for fans waiting to see Chandler sporting Hal Jordan’s more recognizable comic book look. But the Guardian’s arrival and Sinestro’s warning are the pieces that could have much bigger consequences for the story.
