LANTERNS Season 2 Won’t Happen Unless Writers Come Up With a “Worthy Successor” to Its Hit First Season

HBO’s Lanterns has been a massive hit for DC Studios, but that doesn’t mean Season 2 is a sure thing. Despite the impressive ratings and strong response to the Green Lantern series, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran says a second season will only happen if the creative team can deliver a story that lives up to the first.

That’s a pretty high bar to clear, but it’s also good to know DC Studios isn’t interested in rushing out another season just because the show is popular.

During a recent interview with Collider, Safran addressed the possibility of Lanterns Season 2 and revealed that fans should have an answer about the show's future “before the end of the year.”

However, the decision ultimately comes down to what the writers bring to the table. Safran explained: “If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season,”

Considering how successful the first season has been, it makes sense that DC Studios wants to maintain that level of quality rather than move forward with a follow-up that doesn't have a strong story.

The eight-episode series wrapped up its first season and it delivered some major developments for DC's growing cinematic universe. The finale resolved the central mystery surrounding the murder of Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, while also revealing the identity of the second Manhunter.

It also established how Aaron Pierre's John Stewart becomes Earth's sole Green Lantern heading into the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

Those developments have left the door open for more stories, especially with John Stewart playing an important role in the future of the DCU.

Safran also shared that one of the most rewarding aspects of the show's success has been seeing the “Green Lantern” franchise return to the cultural conversation.

After years of waiting for DC to properly explore the Green Lantern mythology in live action, fans finally got a series that connected with audiences and helped establish these characters as major players in the DCU.

Now the question is whether the writers can find another story worth telling. It's encouraging that Safran and the creative team are putting the story first. A successful first season doesn't automatically mean a second one needs to happen, especially if the writers haven't figured out where to take these characters next.

It would be very surprising if DC Studios didn't find a way to keep Lanterns going. We'll hopefully know before the end of 2026 whether Lanterns Season 2 gets the green light.
