LANTERNS Showrunner Chris Mundy Says Although John Stewart Will Be in MAN OF TOMORROW His Season 1 Ending Was Open
Lanterns is finally headed our way this weekend, and it looks like it’s going to be a great series. The show follows veteran intergalactic cop Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they investigate a dark, earth-based murder in the American heartland, uncovering a vast mystery with cosmic implications.
This story is based on the comics from many decades ago, but with characters that will reach across the greater DC universe, namely in the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, this series isn’t exactly a standalone endeavor.
Just like with any comic book based universe, one project to another intertwines and builds. But the creators of this series were given some leeway when making the show’s first season, as revealed by showrunner Chris Mundy.
Mundy told SFX magazine: "We weren't tasked with having any specific landing point, which was great for us because it gave us freedom to land the story where we wanted to land the story.
“But John will be part of the greater DC Universe. That was good for us to know. And where we land him is somewhere that they're happy with us landing him and somewhere they can take him, if they want."
I’m sure the show would have been solid even if John Stewart would have had a place to land, but it’s cool that the creators had the freedom to end the show the way they wanted.
Pierre and Chandler are joined in the Lanterns cast by Laura Linney, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro.
Lanterns arrives on HBO and HBO Max on August 16th.
