LEGO Has Unveiled its Buildable Nintendo Entertainment System Console
LEGO has unveiled its super-cool brick-based replica set of the classic Nintendo Entertainment System, which turns 37-years-old today!
While the LEGO version of the 'console' doesn't actually play any games, it comes with a buildable old-school tube TV with a little 8-bit Mario figure and a crank that slowly moves the level in the background.
The set also comes with a special 'Action Brick' that can be scanned by the Lego Mario that comes with the upcoming Starter Course playset. Once activated, Mario will react to the enemies, obstacles and power-ups that are sliding by on-screen.
The set also comes with an NES controller and cartridge that you can build. You can even pop open the front and 'load' your favorite game, even though it won't actually do anything.
Maarten Simons, the Creative Lead on the set, released the following statement:
Super Mario has been a cherished figure in the gaming world for over thirty years now. Many adults still fondly remember that first time they saw Mario leap across the small screen, even if the graphics were a lot simpler than they are today. With the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System, we’re letting them truly indulge in that nostalgia, recreating one of the most-loved consoles of all time so they can see the Super Mario from their childhoods once again – and even to share the experience of gaming in the 1980s with their own children.
The build includes over 2,600 bricks, and will be available to purchase through Lego's retail stores and website on August 1st for $229.99.
