LEGO STAR WARS: THE SKYWALKER SAGA Makes For A Fun Additions To the LEGO Games
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the latest in the LEGO Star Wars games. I got the chance to play it on the Xbox Series S, and on the whole it has been a fun game. There is one major glitch that can make the experience cumbersome, but overall I think it’s worth playing if you enjoy the LEGO games.
First the bad. I was playing this on the Xbox Series S, so I’m not sure if this is a problem on the other systems, but there was a glitch when using the quick resume after playing two players. I played both by myself and with my husband and when coming back to the game after playing in one player, there was no issue. However, if you didn’t have the exact controllers that we were using to play two players, the game would freak out and become unplayable until you either turned on both of those controllers, or you fully quit the game. My husband and I each have our own controllers for the Xbox and when he played as player one it would not recognize my controller as player one when I went back to play by myself. Even if the second player controller wasn’t connected, instead of simply booting that player out it would require a full shut down or again, turning on that controller. It’s really cumbersome to deal with, not impossible but really annoying.
Now the good, I thought the game looked and sounded great. All the characters are adorable in their LEGO forms, I especially like that if you play as The Mandalorian you get a little baby Grogu floating around with you in his carrier. All the movements are smooth, nothing about the game struggles to run well. I kind of wish that the landscapes looked a little more like they were built out of LEGO, but they looked amazing regardless. This game also introduced voice acting to the franchise and it was worth it. I’ll admit, this is the first LEGO Star Wars game I’ve played for more than a few minutes, but the dialogue adds a new level of humor to the games. I decided to play through The Force Awakens and there were just some truly laugh out loud moments.
The puzzles in free play were also pretty fun to figure out. You’ll get to do more with the more characters you unlock, but I still had fun with just some of the basic characters. There’s a range in the puzzle difficulties although none seemed to be too difficult. The free play would be a great way to play with a kid who doesn’t do well with following along with the story but still wants to play the game with you.
All in all, the game is fun. It’s nice to have all three trilogies in one game and the voice acting adds a nice touch. That glitch with the quick resume really brings it down for me though, hopefully they will fix it in a future patch soon. Until then, I give this game a 7.
